Back in 2004 our daughter was diagnosed with a rare bacteria infection (ecoli 0157) which caused her kidneys to completely shut down (Haemolytic Uremic Syndrome). As Christchurch hospital did not cater for your children on dialysis she needed to get to Starship. Usually Starship would send their plane but as they were being used we were so lucky that NZFD has a plane that was available for us to use. An amazing nurse by the name of Louise came to the hospital and helped with transporting us to the plane. Here both Louise and the pilots settled us onto the plane and made sure Alexis was comfortable. Whilst on the journey to Auckland the pilots could see that I was a bit nervous and anxious with all the bumps so actually got approval to fly at a lower altitude which made the flight a lot smoother. After the flight had landed Alexis received a special toy flying doctors plane which she still treasures to this day. We will be forever grateful for the care and compassion shown through this journey which was one of the toughest we have had to face. Alexis spent 6 weeks in Starship with 5 of them on dialysis. She has recovered 50% kidney function and takes daily medications to maintain this however she is sporty, outgoing and doing amazing.
